A Month — Be the Good Soil

This summer, rather than watching the phone, become the good soil your child grows in. You don't need anything big — simple, unconditional love and presence are enough. Four weeks below, one direction each, at your own pace; each carries a verse and a prayer, and you can send your child encouragement in the app.

Before you begin · Understand the need
The phone often meets a need that hasn't been put into words. Your child may be reaching for one of these:
☐ Friends · belonging ☐ Achievement · competence ☐ Relaxation · relief ☐ Boredom ☐ Autonomy
Hold it in mind. Over the next four weeks we don't take the phone away — together, in real ways, we gently answer the need.
Week 1 · Observe · Be present, not corrective
This week, try not to mention the phone — simply be present and attentive. No need to rush any change; your presence itself is good soil.
If it fits: share a meal, walk after dinner, or just sit together.
(EDB: relationship before the problem; soothe before you solve.)
(EDB original, Chinese) Young people go online for entertainment, to relieve boredom, ease stress, pass time, socialise, gain a sense of achievement, make new friends, and as a way to escape reality.
Week 2 · Explore · Bring the need into the real world
When the moment feels right, gently invite one small real-world thing together — not to replace the phone, but to share an experience. Always at the child's pace; never force it.
Options: with you — a meal, a wander out, buying something they need, a short outing; with friends — invite a classmate over; a hobby — cook, exercise, or hike together.
(EDB: see the unmet need behind the habit and meet it in healthier ways.)
(EDB original, Chinese) Draw up a personalised list of activities other than going online; reorganise the daily timetable to break old online habits.
Week 3 · Walk together · Agree, don’t dictate
Let what you both enjoyed slowly become a rhythm. If an agreement is needed, reach it together rather than impose it — and put your own phone away too.
If it fits: repeat last week's activity; agree on a "phone-free time" you keep together.
(EDB: understand → talk → agree → follow through → self-discipline; a gentle answer turns away wrath.)
(EDB original, Chinese) If parents use only commands, criticism or nagging to persuade a child to cut down on going online, it only intensifies the conflict between the two sides and worsens the addiction.
Week 4 · Celebrate · Give thanks for the relationship
Look back over the month and give thanks for the small moments. You might tell your child the change you notice in yourself (e.g. a little less nagging).
If it fits: celebrate together as a family; plan one small habit to keep after summer.
(EDB: change takes time — don't give up, wait for the harvest.)
(EDB original, Chinese) Keep the order of behaviour and reward — “behaviour first, then reward.” Understand the child's needs — rewards must be set to the child's own preferences to strengthen their motivation to change.
Each weekend · Your alternative-activity list (fill it together)
(EDB original, Chinese) “Parents and children fill in the table together to find alternative activities that can replace going online.”

Parent–Child Screen-Time Agreement

The five steps below follow EDB's slide 48 exactly — open the conversation → listen to each other → find the shared benefit → make a mutual agreement → make sure your child understands. Fill it in together with your child; then share via WhatsApp or copy it. Tip (slide 44): soothe emotions first, then deal with the matter; rushing to lecture and blame only damages the relationship.

Open the conversation
不如我們一起想想?」Start with an “I-message,” not blame. e.g. “I've noticed you've been gaming late several nights and I'm worried about your energy for school — shall we think about it together?”
Listen to each other (empathy)
First understand the emotional need the phone meets (boredom, stress, socialising, achievement, escape).
Find the shared benefit
Not “who wins” — what you both gain (e.g. better sleep, less conflict, time for things you enjoy).
Make a mutual agreement
Co-create the plan and offer choices and rewards to boost cooperation. Agreed by both, not imposed.
Make sure your child understands
Confirm together and “sign.” If needed, we'll review and adjust it together (not punish).

This agreement is generated on your device only — nothing is uploaded, no AI; it is sent only when you tap share.
