A Month — Be the Good Soil
This summer, rather than watching the phone, become the good soil your child grows in. You don't need anything big — simple, unconditional love and presence are enough. Four weeks below, one direction each, at your own pace; each carries a verse and a prayer, and you can send your child encouragement in the app.
Before you begin · Understand the need
The phone often meets a need that hasn't been put into words. Your child may be reaching for one of these: ☐ Friends · belonging ☐ Achievement · competence ☐ Relaxation · relief ☐ Boredom ☐ Autonomy Hold it in mind. Over the next four weeks we don't take the phone away — together, in real ways, we gently answer the need.
“The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.”
“Lord, give me insight to see the real longing behind the screen, and to answer the need with love rather than react to the surface. Amen.”
Week 1 · Observe · Be present, not corrective
This week, try not to mention the phone — simply be present and attentive. No need to rush any change; your presence itself is good soil. If it fits: share a meal, walk after dinner, or just sit together. (EDB: relationship before the problem; soothe before you solve.)
(EDB original, Chinese) Young people go online for entertainment, to relieve boredom, ease stress, pass time, socialise, gain a sense of achievement, make new friends, and as a way to escape reality.
“And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
“Lord, give me Your unconditional love first; let me see only the good in my child today, and not rush to correct. Amen.”
Send your child encouragement in the app:
On the Parent page, send encouragement (💝 sticker · 💬 a kind line · 🟢 WhatsApp) — each +1000 HFC, up to 2000 a day. Your encouragement becomes good soil for your child's Growth Tree. This week: whatever today was like, let them know your love comes with no conditions.
Want a rhythm? You could walk this week like this (one small step a day, at your pace; skipping is fine):
Day 1: Don't mention the phone — just share a meal well.
Day 2: Notice one small good thing your child did; keep it in mind.
Day 3: A 10-minute walk after dinner, or simply sit together.
Day 4: Today, listen first; don't rush to respond or correct.
Day 5: Consider — which need might your child be reaching for in the phone?
Day 6: Say one affirming word — unrelated to the phone.
Day 7: Look back on the week; give thanks for simply being present.
Week 2 · Explore · Bring the need into the real world
When the moment feels right, gently invite one small real-world thing together — not to replace the phone, but to share an experience. Always at the child's pace; never force it. Options: with you — a meal, a wander out, buying something they need, a short outing; with friends — invite a classmate over; a hobby — cook, exercise, or hike together. (EDB: see the unmet need behind the habit and meet it in healthier ways.)
(EDB original, Chinese) Draw up a personalised list of activities other than going online; reorganise the daily timetable to break old online habits.
“We love because he first loved us.”
“Lord, give me the right moment and a gentle voice — to invite, not to push — that in real time together my child may taste being loved. Amen.”
Send your child encouragement in the app:
On the Parent page, send encouragement (💝 sticker · 💬 a kind line · 🟢 WhatsApp) — each +1000 HFC, up to 2000 a day. Your encouragement becomes good soil for your child's Growth Tree. This week: when they join you for one small thing, let them know you noticed and treasured it.
Want a rhythm? You could walk this week like this (one small step a day, at your pace; skipping is fine):
Day 8: If it fits, gently invite your child to do one small thing together.
Day 9: Ask what they've been wanting to try (just ask; don't arrange).
Day 10: If gaming is for friendship, invite a friend over.
Day 11: If free at the weekend, wander out together or get something they need.
Day 12: Do something hands-on together — cook, exercise, or hike.
Day 13: Using the EDB activity list, write down a few alternative activities together.
Day 14: Look back — which activity is most worth repeating?
Week 3 · Walk together · Agree, don’t dictate
Let what you both enjoyed slowly become a rhythm. If an agreement is needed, reach it together rather than impose it — and put your own phone away too. If it fits: repeat last week's activity; agree on a "phone-free time" you keep together. (EDB: understand → talk → agree → follow through → self-discipline; a gentle answer turns away wrath.)
(EDB original, Chinese) If parents use only commands, criticism or nagging to persuade a child to cut down on going online, it only intensifies the conflict between the two sides and worsens the addiction.
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
“Lord, guard my mouth; let my words be gentle. Help me plan together with my child, restrain myself first, and model gentleness. Amen.”

Your encouragement becomes good soil for your child's Growth Tree. This week: when you keep a small agreement together, affirm their cooperation.
Want a rhythm? You could walk this week like this (one small step a day, at your pace; skipping is fine):
Day 15: Repeat the activity they enjoyed last week.
Day 16: Use one "I-message" of care instead of a command.
Day 17: Agree a suitable online time together (decided together, not by you).

Day 19: Appreciate one bit of cooperation or self-discipline today.
Day 21: Look back — which agreement did you both keep?
Week 4 · Celebrate · Give thanks for the relationship
Look back over the month and give thanks for the small moments. You might tell your child the change you notice in yourself (e.g. a little less nagging). If it fits: celebrate together as a family; plan one small habit to keep after summer. (EDB: change takes time — don't give up, wait for the harvest.)
(EDB original, Chinese) Keep the order of behaviour and reward — “behaviour first, then reward.” Understand the child's needs — rewards must be set to the child's own preferences to strengthen their motivation to change.
太 13:8)“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (and “seed on good soil… a crop — a hundred, sixty or thirty times.” Matt 13:8)
“Lord, thank You for the good soil sown in our home this month; in due time, may what was planted bear fruit thirty, sixty, a hundredfold. Amen.”

Your encouragement becomes good soil for your child's Growth Tree. This week: thank your child for walking this month with you, and give thanks for your relationship.
Want a rhythm? You could walk this week like this (one small step a day, at your pace; skipping is fine):

Parent–Child Screen-Time Agreement
The five steps below follow EDB's slide 48 exactly — open the conversation → listen to each other → find the shared benefit → make a mutual agreement → make sure your child understands. Fill it in together with your child; then share via WhatsApp or copy it. Tip (slide 44): soothe emotions first, then deal with the matter; rushing to lecture and blame only damages the relationship.
Open the conversation
不如我們一起想想?」Start with an “I-message,” not blame. e.g. “I've noticed you've been gaming late several nights and I'm worried about your energy for school — shall we think about it together?”
Listen to each other (empathy)
First understand the emotional need the phone meets (boredom, stress, socialising, achievement, escape).
Find the shared benefit
Not “who wins” — what you both gain (e.g. better sleep, less conflict, time for things you enjoy).
Make a mutual agreement
Co-create the plan and offer choices and rewards to boost cooperation. Agreed by both, not imposed.
Make sure your child understands
Confirm together and “sign.” If needed, we'll review and adjust it together (not punish).
This page cannot handle a crisis. If you're worried about your child's safety or emotions, please reach out for real support:

Remember: a strong reaction can escalate conflict — patience, a pause, and listening often matter more than "winning" the conversation.
