Setting healthy boundaries, breaking the cold war
Last lesson dealt with the inside: tearing the IOU, surrendering judgment. This lesson deals with the outside: biblical healthy boundaries, saying "no" calmly and firmly — without forgetting to actively break the cold war.
Jacob's Mizpah Stones
31:44-52)After 20 years of exploitation by Laban, Jacob sets up stones as a covenant boundary instead of seeking revenge. (Gen 31:44-52)
David Withdraws to the Stronghold
David spares Saul twice, but doesn't return to the palace with him — he withdraws to safety. (1 Sam 24)
Joseph's Careful Testing
Joseph had forgiven his brothers already — but tested them first to confirm real repentance. (Gen 42-45)
Jesus Didn't Entrust Himself to the Crowd
2:23-25)Jesus "would not entrust himself" to the crowds who believed because of signs. Unconditional love isn't unguarded trust. (John 2:23-25)
Paul's Warning About Alexander
4:14-15)"Alexander did me great harm; the Lord will repay him. Be on guard against him too." (2 Tim 4:14-15)
Family healing: mutual apology and forgiveness
A family's journey through mutual apology and forgiveness — rebuilding healthy boundaries and relationship.
The father who woke up
A teen who self-harmed and ran away; a distant father learned to listen — nine years of forgiveness and rebuilt boundaries.
▶ 🎙️"Holding Forgiveness and Boundaries" — Katlyn Steele
A direct teaching: what biblical forgiveness is, and how boundaries fit alongside it — forgiveness and boundaries aren't contradictory.
Your task: find one yourself
Search for a real person who forgave someone who hurt them — while still setting a healthy boundary (not instantly restoring full trust).
Links verified as real and working; teachers should still preview content for suitability before class.
Four kinds of harm, four concrete responses
Verbal put-downs & emotional blackmail
Basis: Matt 5:37; Prov 26:4. Technique: the Gray Rock method — stay neutral, calm, unreactive.
Financial exploitation & shifted responsibility
Basis: Gal 6:2, 6:5 — bear one another's unavoidable burdens, but carry your own everyday responsibilities.
Covert sabotage & narcissistic dynamics
Basis: Titus 3:10; 2 Tim 3:5; Matt 7:6. Response: Low-Contact — cut off private sharing, keep interaction to polite basics.
Physical violence & safety crises
If you are in physical danger, contact a school social worker, police, or a shelter immediately. Reporting and seeking protection is not "betraying your family."
Two transcendent actions, two real classroom cases
5:44, 47)Two transcendent actions (Matt 5:44, 47)
Prayer isn't asking God to excuse wrongdoing. Active greeting isn't people-pleasing — it declares: "In Christ I am free."
Case studies (read & reflect — no performance required)
Case 1: Chit's story (sibling bullying and boundaries)
Chit's (F4) older brother is domineering — regularly taking his allowance and shoes; when Chit protests, his brother insults and shoves him. Their mother blames Chit: "You're the younger one, learn to endure — doesn't the Bible say forgive seventy times seven?" Chit grows silent and starts skipping class.
What theological error does the mother make?
Per the Four-Pillar Matrix, how should Chit forgive internally — and what "Mizpah stones" should he set externally?
Case 2: Yan's story (friendship betrayal and the cold-war trap)
Yan (F5) told her best friend Man a family secret; after a small quarrel, Man exposed it in the class group chat, and Yan was mocked. Since then Yan treats Man as invisible — dodging her, rolling her eyes, posting bitter IG stories. Yet every day her heart races with pain.
What does Yan's avoidance actually reveal about her inner state?
Per Matt 5:44 and 5:47, how might Yan break the chain?
Teachers may optionally invite role-play of "cold shoulder vs. active greeting" — this lesson defaults to individual reading; role-play is opt-in.

Two-week follow-up card
Forgiveness and boundaries are a process. In your own notebook, note what you tore up in the last lesson. In two weeks, re-read it and ask: "Do I still want to get even, or have I let it go?" If you're still struggling, talk privately with a teacher, chaplain, or counsellor.
