Suitability & respect for parents

This unit (lesson plans, lesson materials, student worksheets, slides, the "Campus Unseen Files" videos and the 3D games) is only for teacher-led religious-education lessons in Christian / Catholic secondary schools.
• Not for primary students.
• Not for students who are easily frightened or distressed: teachers should know their students beforehand and let any student stop at any time or do another learning activity.
• Not for non-Christian / non-Catholic schools.
This unit is not meant to create conflict in families. Teachers must teach students to respect their parents' religion and to follow their family's practices with love; students are encouraged to talk with their parents and to respect, love and honour their parents in the Lord ("Honour your father and your mother", Exodus 20:12). Where a student's beliefs differ from the family's, respond with prayer and love — never with argument or confrontation.

1. Have you, your family or a friend ever "encountered a ghost"? Share briefly.

2. Have you (or family/friends) taken part in anything that contacts the spirit world?

3. If yes, what happened and how did you feel? If not, what do you think of these activities?

"...in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes."

Do we realise how the devil shapes our idea of "ghosts" through modern horror films and traditional Chinese folk thinking? Let's not fall for his tricks.

iv.
iv. What changed before vs. after deliverance?
Reveal after students attempt their own answers

1) Where do demons come from?

A) Modern horror films / Chinese folk belief: after death, a person becomes a ghost.

B) The Bible's view: I) After death a person only awaits resurrection and judgment, and does not become a ghost. II) After death a person also cannot return to the living world to appear to people in different ways.

2) Why do "ancestors visiting dreams" or "mediums channeling the dead" happen?

"For Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve."

The Bible's view: these are all evil spirits disguising themselves, in order to deceive people.

3) The True Origin of "Demons" (or "the Devil," "Satan")

4) Will God destroy the devil? Why hasn't He done it yet?

The devil "lives" in darkness — moral darkness, i.e. sin. So if God destroyed the devil right now, what would happen to our not-yet-believing friends? God is giving us time, through His Son Jesus Christ, to leave the kingdom of darkness.

Catholic Teaching: Authority Over Demons Comes from Christ

Exorcism is never a human-vs-demon standoff, nor a contest between equal-and-opposite good and evil (the Church explicitly rejects that dualism). Christ's suffering, death and resurrection already destroyed Satan's power at the cosmic level — an exorcism doesn't create a new victory, it applies the victory Christ has already won.

No exorcist has personal supernatural power — Christ delegated this authority to the apostles and disciples (Luke 9:1, Mark 16:17), and an exorcist acts "in the person of Christ" and "in Jesus' name." A Solemn Exorcism is a formal Sacramental of the Church, strictly governed by Canon 1172: only a priest explicitly mandated by the diocesan bishop, following the Roman Ritual, has the authority to perform it.

5) The Era We Live In

Our era is like WWII after Japan surrendered, yet some troops in mainland China kept fighting — Jesus has already defeated the devil on the cross, but he still operates in the world; resisting him through Jesus is called spiritual warfare.

Extension: Examining the Logic of Reincarnation

"Past lives" and reincarnation are widely popular explanations for suffering and fate. Orthodox Buddhist teaching divides the six realms into three good (heaven, human, asura) and three evil (animal, hungry ghost, hell) realms, with karma determining where one is reborn based on one's moral conduct in this life.

Unlearned ability

Two core logical contradictions: ① If only the morally virtuous are reborn human, humanity's overall moral level should rise generation by generation — but history shows no such moral progress, if anything the opposite. ② If only 1 in 6 souls is reborn human, the human population should shrink over time — yet it has exploded from a few hundred million in ancient times to over 8 billion today, a mathematical contradiction the theory struggles to explain.

About the Author and the Story

C.S. Lewis (1898–1963), author of The Chronicles of Narnia, was an Oxford and Cambridge professor and one of the 20th century's most influential Christian apologists. A former atheist, he converted to Christianity after a long intellectual struggle. In 1950 he published The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe — four siblings (Peter, Susan, Edmund, Lucy) stumble through a magic wardrobe into Narnia, where they meet Aslan the lion (a Christ-figure) and the White Witch (a Satan-figure), who has cursed the land into an eternal winter with no Christmas.

The White Witch's temptation: where does real peace come from?

When facing fear and difficulty, people naturally look for peace; different cultures and traditions have different ways, and we respect other people's beliefs and our family's intentions. In Narnia, the White Witch lures Edmund with Turkish Delight and the promise of being a prince: instant comfort that draws him away from his family. From a Christian perspective, we believe real peace comes from Jesus Christ; and the Ten Commandments tell us to "honour your father and your mother" — no confrontation or arguing, but prayer and love.

Catholic Teaching: Ordinary vs. Extraordinary Demonic Action

Ordinary Action
Temptation — the everyday moral struggle common to all believers; the most common threat, and not something needing an exorcism.
Extraordinary Action
Possession (temporary control of body/speech), obsession (persistent violent fear), vexation, and infestation of places.

Spiritual "entry points" include occult involvement (divination, spiritism, charms) and persistent unrepentant sin or unforgiveness — both weaken spiritual defences. The Church also requires ruling out medical/psychiatric causes first, before considering a spiritual explanation.

Three Enemies: World, Devil, Self

The Devil's Deception of the Not-Yet-Believing

Biblically, spiritual warfare is not only about possession or exorcism — that is only one facet of the fight.

A gentle reminder: this lesson is taught from a Christian perspective. Respect your parents' religion and follow your family's practices with love; talk with your parents first, and respect, love and honour them in the Lord ("Honour your father and your mother", Exod 20:12). This lesson is not meant to set you against your family. If you feel afraid or uneasy, tell your teacher and stop at any time.

Three enemies: the world, the devil, and myself

These three enemies keep "teaming up" to break our relationships with God, others and ourselves. Tap each enemy to see how it attacks the student; after all three, see how it ends.

Lies vs truth: the armoured student fights back

The devil's lies fly at the student like flaming arrows. Before one hits her, choose the word of God that defeats it — she will shatter the lie with the sword of the Spirit and the shield of faith!

Thought Struggle → the Devil's Lie → the Truth

The world, the flesh, the devil” (3 students)
Truth friends” (1–2 students with verse cards)

“The mind” reads the lies aloud and says how they feel.
The “truth friends” cover each lie with a verse card, e.g. “There is therefore now no condemnation…” (Rom 8:1).
The class says the “cockroach” three steps together: notice it, don’t let it stay, replace it with truth.
Debrief: which lie came most often this week? Which verse will you replace it with?

Your Own Struggle

Catholic Teaching: The Sacramental Life as Lasting Protection

Deliverance is never mechanical magic — the person's own free will matters. They must actively choose repentance, renounce any involvement in the occult, and let go of hatred through forgiveness; without that cooperation, an exorcism struggles to take lasting effect.

Regularly receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) and the Eucharist provide far stronger, lasting spiritual protection than a rite on its own. Ongoing prayer, Scripture, and remaining in a state of grace are the real, durable defence against a demon's return.

Pray quietly together at the cue.
Stands across the room with a torch or phone light (pointed at the floor or a cross — never into anyone’s eyes).

流程Steps

1. Read (1 min)

The teacher reads 2 Cor 4:4. “嘉欣” puts on the mask.

2. Find the light (2 min)

The teacher switches on the light: “嘉欣, walk to the light.” The “Lies” take turns: “You can’t do it”, “Nobody cares”, “You’re not good enough”, “Just check your phone first”. The class watches quietly.

3. Someone walks with you (2 min)

The friend comes alongside: “I’m here — follow my voice.” The class prays softly: “Lord, shine on her / him.” The “Lies” grow quieter and sit down.

4. Seeing the light (1 min)

老師讀出林後 4:6:「那吩咐光從黑暗裡照出來的神,已經照在我們心裡……」When “嘉欣” arrives, she or he removes the mask and sees the light on the cross (or the projected verse). The teacher reads 2 Cor 4:6.

5. Debrief (2 min)

Ask “嘉欣”: “How did it feel? Which voice helped most?” Then the class: what stops people “seeing” Jesus today (phones, grades, fear, others’ opinions)? Who could you pray for?

Safety
Volunteers only; students who are anxious or dislike being blindfolded can take another role or observe.
Students put on and take off the mask themselves; the guiding friend is the same sex; no physical contact except an agreed light hand on the shoulder.
Clear the walking path of chairs and bags; the teacher stays close throughout.
The “Lies” use voices only, with lines the teacher gives in advance — never aimed at any student or family; never shine the light into eyes.
Thank every participant afterwards, and remind the class that the “Lies” were roles, not the students themselves.

Question cards (group discussion)

Each group takes two or three cards: think first, then read the response and verse, then discuss “think further”.

Is all this just mental illness? What do doctors say about sleep paralysis and “possession”?

A doctor’s view: “ghost pressing” is sleep paralysis — between sleep and waking the body is still in its sleep “pause”, so you cannot move; some people feel pressure on the chest, see images or sense someone in the room. Studies estimate about 8% of people experience it at least once, and nearer 30% of students; common triggers are lack of sleep, irregular hours and stress. For “possession”-type experiences, doctors first look for physical or mental-health causes — for example dissociative disorders, psychosis, epilepsy or the effects of drugs — and treat accordingly.

A Christian view: many experiences do have a medical explanation, so seeing a doctor is right and is not a lack of faith. The Bible itself records “the sick” and “the demon-possessed” separately — not every illness is demonic.

4:24 · Matthew 4:24 (WEB)
"The report about him went out into all Syria. They brought to him all who were sick, afflicted with various diseases and torments, possessed with demons, epileptics, and paralytics; and he healed them."

How do you tell a mental-health problem from “possession”? What do doctors and pastors say?

A doctor’s view: doctors take a detailed history, examine and assess, rule out physical and mental-health causes, and treat according to the diagnosis; many frightening experiences improve clearly with treatment.

A pastor’s view: responsible churches first ask the person to see a doctor and work together with doctors, rather than rushing to “cast out demons”; only in very rare cases that medical assessment cannot explain do experienced pastors handle it, carefully.

For students: do not judge for yourself, and never “diagnose” others. Tell your family and teacher and see a doctor; believers can also pray, and seek a pastor’s help with their parents’ knowledge.

The cockroach picture is about how we deal with “lie” thoughts (like “you are worthless”): notice them, do not let them stay, replace them with truth. You may not see evil spirits, but you can see what those thoughts do to you.

Also, many real things are invisible yet known by their effects — wind, gravity, love; Jesus Himself used the picture of the wind.

Most importantly, the heart of Christianity is not “seeing spirits” but the person of Jesus — His life, death and resurrection can be weighed with history and reason (see today’s five reasons). You can start by getting to know Jesus, not by “seeing ghosts”.

3:8 · John 3:8 (WEB)
"The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”"

What do you believe in without seeing it? On what basis?

This has nothing to do with me.

Even if you have never had a “ghost story”, everyone faces fear, stress, negative thoughts about themselves, temptation and addiction (like the phone). This unit’s “three enemies” and “lies vs truth” are about exactly these everyday struggles.

You do not have to believe anything because of this lesson, but knowing how to spot lies, handle fear and get help is useful for everyone — and helps you understand classmates and family from different backgrounds.

1:7 · 2 Timothy 1:7 (WEB)
"For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control."

In the past week, which “lie thought” came to your mind most often?

My “spiritual trouble” seemed to be driven away by a “white witch” — for example, a relative got better after a temple ritual. Why would I still need Jesus?

First, be thankful that your relative got better. Family members do this out of love and care; respect your elders, and respect, love and honour your parents in the Lord (Exodus 20:12) — do not criticise or argue.

To be honest, recovery can have many causes: the body healing itself, a doctor’s treatment, time, or comfort for the mind.

A Christian view: “it worked” does not mean “it came from God”. The Bible tells of a slave girl whose fortune-telling “worked”, yet Paul set her free in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 16:16-18). Like the White Witch in Narnia, something may seem to help yet lead to more dependence, more taboos and more fear. Jesus offers not a one-off “deal” but free grace, real freedom and a relationship that lasts for ever.

8:36 · John 8:36 (WEB)
"If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed."

What is the difference between “it seemed to work” and “real freedom”?

A classmate drew fortune sticks and wore an amulet before an exam, then did very well. Doesn’t that prove it works?

Doing well can come from hard work, and from feeling more confident (a psychological effect). But if confidence depends on the amulet, next time without it you feel more anxious and keep looking for more protection — like the White Witch’s Turkish Delight: the more you eat, the more you want.

The peace Jesus gives does not depend on any object but on His presence: we can tell God our worries and still study hard. Respect your classmate’s beliefs and never mock them.

4:6-7 · Philippians 4:6-7 (WEB)
"In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus."

Reference clips (verified):

What usually gives you peace before an exam?

Strange things kept happening in a neighbour’s home; after a master performed a ritual, it became calm. If the problem is solved, why would anyone need Jesus?

We respect our neighbours and their beliefs. From a Christian perspective, relying on another spiritual power may bring calm for a while, but often means repeating rituals, keeping more taboos, and still fearing “will it come back?”.

Christians believe Jesus has already overcome every dark power on the cross, once for all; following Him does not mean paying again and again or “renewing a contract”, but living securely in God’s love.

3:8 · 1 John 3:8 (WEB)
"He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was revealed: that he might destroy the works of the devil."

Reference clips (verified):

How is “calm for a while” different from “lasting peace”?

If every method seems to “work”, isn’t believing anything the same?

We respect every faith and mock no one’s choice. What Christians invite you to compare is not only “does it work?”, but: what does it cost? Is it a deal or grace? Does it make you more dependent and afraid, or more free and at peace?

In Narnia the White Witch demanded Edmund’s loyalty, even betraying his family; Aslan instead died in Edmund’s place. Jesus said the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy — He came that we may have life, and have it abundantly.

10:10 · John 10:10 (WEB)
"The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly."

The White Witch and Aslan — who demands a price, and who pays it?

Thoughts like “I am worthless” and “nobody likes me” keep coming. Is that the devil attacking, or just my own thinking?

A psychology view: we all have constant “self-talk”, and negative automatic thoughts affect our feelings and behaviour; counselling often helps people notice these thoughts, check the evidence, and replace them with truer ones.

A Christian view: such thoughts may come from our own wounds (the flesh), the world’s standards (grades, looks, likes), or the devil — whom the Bible calls “the father of lies” (John 8:44). We need not call every thought demonic, nor ignore it; whatever the source, the response is the same — like the cockroach: notice it, do not let it stay, replace it with truth.

If these thoughts keep pulling your mood down, tell your family, a teacher or the school social worker, and seek professional help.

10:5 · 2 Corinthians 10:5 (WEB)
"throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;"

Write down one lie thought that often comes, then one truth to replace it.

If I believe “I will definitely fail”, will I really fail? How do I break the cycle?

Sociologists call this a “self-fulfilling prophecy”: believing you will fail → trying less or giving up → really failing → believing even more “I knew I couldn’t”. The power of a lie is that it makes people live by it.

Breaking the cycle: (1) notice it is a prediction, not a fact; (2) replace it with truth — in Christ your worth is not your grades or others’ opinions, but being God’s loved child; (3) take one small step (for example, study for twenty minutes today); (4) tell someone you trust and ask them to encourage you and pray. This is what Lesson 4’s “lies vs truth” and the “arrows” in the Episode 5 game are about.

4:8 · Philippians 4:8 (WEB)
"Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things."

Main question 2: how do we tell a spiritual attack from mental illness?

Replay the views of pastor Dr Enoch Lam and psychiatrist Dr Liu Kwong-sun, and fill in the blanks. In class, play only these two segments (skip 00:26–03:28, which has frightening descriptions).

Fill in the blanks (replay the pastor and the doctor)

Summary: mental-health problems are far more common than possession; see a doctor first and follow the treatment, and pastors working with doctors is the safest way. Never judge for yourself or “diagnose” others.

Main question 1: why are demons afraid of hymns centred on the Cross, rather than other gentle hymns?

Experienced pastors report that in cases of spiritual disturbance, the strongest reaction comes when hymns centred on the Cross and the blood of Jesus are sung (such as “Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross”). How does the Bible explain this?

Come near the Cross (interactive)

Press “Come nearer” and follow this person with a heavy load, the devil clinging to it, step by step to the Cross: the nearer the Cross, the lighter the load, until the devil flees. Each step has Scripture.

What does the Bible say?

The Cross is where Jesus defeated the devil:耶穌藉著死,敗壞那掌死權的魔鬼,並仗著十字架誇勝。 By His death Jesus destroyed the one who holds the power of death and triumphed by the Cross. Cross-centred hymns proclaim this finished victory.
2:15 · Colossians 2:15 (WEB)
"having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it."
2:14-15 · Hebrews 2:14-15 (WEB)
"Since then the children have shared in flesh and blood, he also himself in the same way partook of the same, that through death he might bring to nothing him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might deliver all of them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage."
The message of the Cross is the power of God:力量不在旋律或歌聲,而在詩歌所宣講的真理:耶穌為我們死而復活。The power is not in the tune or the singing but in the truth the hymn proclaims: Jesus died and rose for us.
1:18 · 1 Corinthians 1:18 (WEB)
"For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying, but to us who are saved it is the power of God."
The blood of the Lamb and the word of testimony:聖經說,信徒勝過控告者,是因羔羊的血和自己所見證的道;唱十架詩歌,就是一起見證基督的寶血。Believers overcome the accuser by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony; singing of the Cross is testifying to Christ’s blood together.
12:11 · Revelation 12:11 (WEB)
"They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn’t love their life, even to death."
Gentle songs are good too — but their focus differs:讚美大自然或分享感受的詩歌都很美,但未必直接宣告耶穌在十架上的得勝;魔鬼最怕的,是被宣告已經戰敗。Songs about nature or feelings are lovely, but may not proclaim Jesus’ victory on the Cross; what the devil fears is the announcement of its defeat.
A hymn is not a spell:唱詩不是魔法或「辟邪」工具;重要的是以信心、真心敬拜耶穌。 Singing is not magic or a charm; what matters is worshipping Jesus with faith and sincerity. If troubled, still see a doctor and ask a trusted adult for help.

(01:02) — Some hymns do not mention the Cross, the blood of Jesus Christ or the Triune God, and only speak of love — they are not enough for deliverance.

《十架為我榮耀(粵語)Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross》— 潘敏珊 · 天天頌揚

她一生寫了八千多首詩歌;1869 年寫成《Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross》,由 William H. Doane 作曲。The story behind the hymn: Fanny J. Crosby (1820–1915) lost her sight at about six weeks old after wrong treatment by an unqualified doctor. Her devout grandmother taught her about God and the life of Jesus. She wrote more than 8,000 hymns; in 1869 she wrote “Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross”, with music by William H. Doane.
(02:08) — She said: “I would rather have been born blind, because then, when I reach my Lord one day, the first sight my eyes will see is my Lord Jesus Christ.”

1.
那裡湧流活泉;
Jesus, keep me near the cross,
There a precious fountain,
Free to all, a healing stream,
Flows from Calv’ry’s mountain.
2.

Near the cross, a trembling soul,
Love and mercy found me;
There the bright and morning Star
Shed its beams around me.
3.
願你常顯我前;
Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day,
With its shadow o’er me.
4.
盼望信靠不變;
Near the cross I’ll watch and wait,
Hoping, trusting ever,
Till I reach the golden strand,
Just beyond the river.

Be my glory ever;
Till my raptured soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.

Five reasons worth thinking about

Each reason comes with “to be honest”: science and history give reasons to think, but cannot replace personal faith.

The universe had a beginning

(Georges Lemaître)。Modern cosmology (the Big Bang theory) shows that the universe had a beginning about 13.8 billion years ago. It was first proposed by the Belgian physicist and Catholic priest Georges Lemaître.

Science explains how the universe developed, but not why there is a universe at all.
1:1 · Genesis 1:1 (WEB)
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
A finely tuned universe

Physicists have found that if some basic constants (such as the strength of gravity and the other fundamental forces) were only slightly different, stars, planets and life could hardly exist.

Scientists explain it differently (for example, the multiverse hypothesis). Fine-tuning does not prove God, but it makes us ask whether the universe has a designer.
1:20 · Romans 1:20 (WEB)
"For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse."
Are the Gospels reliable?

More than 5,800 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament survive — far more than for most ancient texts; the earliest fragment (P52, from John) is usually dated to the second century. The Roman historian Tacitus and the Jewish historian Josephus also mention Jesus.

History shows that Jesus really lived and was crucified under Pontius Pilate; who Jesus is, each person must consider for themselves.
20:31 · John 20:31 (WEB)
"but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name."
Clues to the resurrection

In 1 Corinthians 15 Paul quotes a very early statement of faith listing people who saw the risen Jesus, including “over five hundred brothers”; many scholars date it to within a few years of the crucifixion. The disciples changed from hiding in fear to being willing to suffer for it.

The resurrection is a claim of faith, and historians interpret the evidence differently — but the clues deserve serious thought.
15:3-6 · 1 Corinthians 15:3-6 (WEB)
"For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers at once, most of whom remain until now, but some have also fallen asleep."
Scientists and faith

Many scientists have believed in God: Newton, Faraday, Mendel (the father of genetics, an Augustinian friar), Lemaître, and Francis Collins, who led the Human Genome Project. Science studies how nature works; faith answers the meaning of life — the two can stand together.

Scientists believing in God does not prove God exists, but it shows that “if you study science you cannot believe” is not true.
22:37 · Matthew 22:37 (WEB)
"Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’"

Answered prayer: can we “test” it?

Many Christians have experienced answered prayer, like the testimonies in Episodes 1 and 4. But we must be honest: some large scientific studies (for example a 2006 study of about 1,800 heart-surgery patients) found no measurable difference from praying for patients. Why? Prayer is not a vending machine but a relationship with God; His answer may be “yes”, “wait” or “I have something better”. Jesus also said, “You shall not test the Lord, your God.”

The teacher may share a personal prayer story — including one that did not turn out as hoped and was only understood later.

Seven-day prayer diary: write down one real need; spend one minute each day telling God about it; note what you notice (including peace inside).

4:7 · Matthew 4:7 (WEB)
"Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test the Lord, your God.’”"
